Do Joomla 4 templates work with Joomla 5?

Joomla 4 templates are compatible with Joomla 5. However, it is always recommended to check the template's compatibility before installing it.

Most Joomla 4 templates have been updated to be compatible with Joomla 5. However, some templates, including custom templates or older third-party templates, may not be compatible.

If you are using a Joomla 4 template, you can check its compatibility with Joomla 5 by following these steps:

1. Open the template manager.
2. Click on the template you want to check.
3. In the "Information" column, look for the "Compatibility" section.

If the "Compatibility" section indicates that the template is compatible with Joomla 5, then the template should work without issue.

If the "Compatibility" section indicates that the template is not compatible with Joomla 5, you can try to update the template to a newer version. If updating is not possible, you may need to find a new template that is compatible with Joomla 5.

Here are some tips for choosing a compatible Joomla 5 template:

* Look for templates that have been updated to be compatible with Joomla 5.
* Read user comments to see if the template has been tested with Joomla 5.
* Contact the template developer to make sure it is compatible with Joomla 5.

If you are using a custom template, you may need to convert it to be compatible with Joomla 5. This can be a complex task, so it is recommended to enlist the help of a qualified developer if you do not know how to do it.

* Joomla 4 and Joomla 5 use the same database structure, so content and settings from a Joomla 4 site can be migrated to a Joomla 5 site without issue.
* Joomla 5 introduces some new features and functionality that may not be available in Joomla 4 templates. If you are using a template that relies on these features, you may need to update the template or find a new template that is compatible with Joomla 5.

How to Change Favicon Cassiopeia Template Joomla4

How to Change Favicon Cassiopeia Template Joomla4

Unlike some templates, the default Cassiopeia template in Joomla 4 has no option in the style settings to change the favicon, and at the time of writing they haven't included this in the documentation.

Thankfully, changing the favicon from the default Joomla icon to your own custom icon is fairly simple.

Option 1: Use Phoca Favicon

Phoca Favicon is a free extension you may install which makes it easy to change the favicon, with any template. Since Cassiopeia doesn't readily provide this functionality in its settings, this is probably the easiest way to achieve it.

With Phoca Favicon, simply install the component. The component is very easy to use. You just click "create favicon," select the template you're using, upload your image, and click "Create." That's it.

screenshot of phoca favicon

Option 2: Place Favicon In System Images Folder

Simply take your favicon file, name it favicon.ico, and overrite the old image at: yoursite/media/system/images

So it should be... yoursite/media/system/images/favicon.ico

You will have to do this through FTP or your web host's file manager, as you cannot get to the template folder from Joomla's built in media manager. You could also change your media manager to point to the root directory, but I wouldn't recommend this for security reasons.

That will get the favicon displaying properly. However, if you want to fully change the favicon, there are a few more steps you need to take.

3 Favicon Files

Ideally, your source favicon.ico file should be an SVG (vector) file. The way Cassiopeia is currently set up, it actually links to three different favicon files.

  • favicon.ico
  • joomla-favicon.svg
  • joomla-favicon-pinned.svg

Initially, it pulls these images from yoursite/media/system/images. If you place the same files under yoursite/media/templates/site/cassiopeia/images, the files under the templates directory are used in lieu of the system directory.

So if you want to fully replace all 3 files, you need to place your favicon.ico under yoursite/media/system/images as discussed before. You must also create SVG versions of your favicon and place them under yoursite/media/system/images with the filenames joomla-favicon.svg and joomla-favicon-pinned.svg

Cache Issue

If you replace the favicon and don't notice any changes, it's likely because your browser has cached the old version. If you're unfamiliar with caching, it relates to performance. You need to clear your browser cache.

If you're using a Chromium based browser, just right click the page, select "inspect" to open dev tools, navigate to the "Network" tab at the top, and click the little "Disable cache" checkbox. Reload the page and see if that resolves the issue.

If that doesn't work, you may have to clear the Joomla system cache, the cache through your web host's performance options, or the cache through your CDN (if you use something like cloudflare). Alternatively, just wait a few hours and see if it changes by itself.

Don't Know How To Make a Favicon?

If you don't know how to make a favicon file, you can use a tool like favicongenerator to generate it for you. Simply upload your square image file to favicongenerator, save the generated ico file as favicon.ico, and follow the above instructions.

Updated 3/2/22 to reflect location of the favicon as of Joomla 4.1 - If you're using an older version, the favicon is located in yoursite/templates/cassiopeia/images

How to Customize Joomla4 Administrator Template Atum

How to Customize Joomla4 Administrator Template Atum

 How to customize Atum template Joomla 4

Atum is the name of the default administrator template in Joomla 4. It has several settings you may customize to fit the needs of your brand. The logo and color schemes may be easily changed.

As a bonus, if you administer multiple Joomla powered websites, this makes it easier to tell them apart.

For example, on Kevin's Guides (this website) I have customized the admin template to fit in with my purple color scheme and logos.

Template Style Settings

Templates in Joomla 4 are broken into two parts - the template itself and the "style." It's possible to have one template with multiple styles. At this time (as far as I could find), the default Atum template is the only administrator template available for Joomla 4. You can think of the template as the template itself, and the style is the customized version of that template. So to customize Atum, we need to make changes to the style settings.

Open your administration panel and log in. Navigate to "System" and then "Administrator Template Styles," under the "Templates" section.

open admin template stylesNavigate to Admin Template Styles

There should only be one template style available, unless you've already made customizations. Open the default "Atum - Default" style to view its settings. This is where we will make our customizations.

template styles adminOpen the default style

Color Settings

There are three tabs on the style settings page for Atum. The first tab just displays details about the template. The second tab contains the color settings. This is where you can set the template colors to match the scheme of your website or brand.

  • Hue Value
    • The most important color setting
    • This is the main color of the template, which appears in the background and top area of the template.
    • Slightly darker and lighter variations of this hue will be used across the template.
  • Light Background
    • This is the color that most notably shows up in dropdown menu toggle buttons
    • I'd recommend selecting a lighter version of your hue value color
  • Dark Text
    • This color appears in top menu buttons, paragraph text, and labels for groups of fields in various places throughout the template. I'd select something dark, close to black or grey.
  • Light Text
    • This appears over some buttons and areas with darker backgrounds. Use white or a very light color.
  • Link Color
    • The color of links throughout the interface
  • Special Color
    • I haven't found where this color shows up. If you figure it out, leave in comments. As far as I can tell, this does nothing.
  • Set Color to Monochrome
    • This makes the entire template black and white or greyscale

Image Settings

The image settings tab allows you to customize the logos displayed in areas of the admin template. These are pretty self explanatory, but here's a description if you need it:

  • Login Logo
    • The logo displayed on the login form when you log into the administration panel.
  • Brand Large
    • A large format logo. Usually your full logo with text. Use a wider, horizontal image here. This is what appears in the top left of the admin panel when you're logged in, above the menu.
    • Use a horizontal SVG with a 15:3 ratio, or a 300x60 image.
  • Brand Small
    • A smaller version of your logo. Usually in square format. The logo only without text is ideal. This is what is displayed when the admin menu is collapsed.
    • Use a square SVG if possible, or 64x64 image.

FREE BLANK TEMPLATE JOOMLA 4

FREE BLANK TEMPLATE JOOMLA 4

 Joomla 4 Cassiopeia template  includes Bootstrap 5.1, and a very basic Bootstrap grid layout with a sidebar and a few module positions.

 Joomla 4 Blank Template - j4starter

This template works with Joomla 4 and is designed to act as a starting point for developers and hobbyists to start building their own custom templates on. I have tried my best to add tons of comments so you know exactly what does what.

ust download the zip and install it with the extension manager. You should then be able to go to the templates/j4starter directory and start making changes.

overview image of the layout of this template j4starter

FREE BLANK TEMPLATE JOOMLA 4

The most important part of the template, where you can edit the HTML output and PHP used, can be found in the site_root/templates/j4starter directory.

As of Joomla 4.1, the convention has changed to store all template images, js, css, and scss in the MEDIA folder. This means when you install the template, a new folder under your_site_root/media/templates/site/j4starter will be created. All the template media files your template uses will come from here. So if you need to create/edit the CSS, JS, or images your template uses, do so with the files in the media folder.

The same logic applies to the languages folder. Your site uses the files under site_root/language/en-GB when reading language definitions. If you need to make changes to the language files, you must do it there.

Here's a summary of where to find each file after the template's been installed, and what you might need to edit it for.

  • /joomla
    • /templates
      • /j4starter
        • index.php - contains the HTML output of the template itself, this is where you may add custom HTML/PHP code to your template
        • joomla.asset.json - contains a list of the template assets (scripts, stylesheets), you will need to edit this file if you change the name of your template or add additional files
        • templateDetails.xml - this is where you can add user configurable template style settings (fields), tell Joomla where your files and folders are, and set details like the template title and author information
    • /language
      • /en-GB
        • tpl_j4starter.ini - your templates language files, where it pulls label text and such from
        • tpl_j4starter.sys.ini
    • /media/templates/site/j4starter
      • /css
        • template.min.css - the final output css file used by the template
      • /images - where you place your templates image files
      • /js - where the templates javascript goes
        • template.min.js - the default js file used in the template
      • /scss - where you can edit the stylesheets, with the help of SASS

How to migrate Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 4

How to migrate Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 4

You're running on Joomla 2.5 on your site. You're going to do the mini-migration to 3.5.1. It will force you to stop there and re-login. You will then update to 3.6.5 where it will stop there and force you to login again. Then, you'll update to 3.10.x. Finally, you'll do the mini-migration to 4.x.

Most likely, you will need to change out your template as it won't be compatible with Joomla 2.5, 3, and 4. Before you start, change the default template to Beez3 in Joomla 2.5. That template should get you all the way through to Joomla 4.x. Then you can either use Cassiopeia or a different template in Joomla 4.

When it comes to testing in between all the steps, do it. However you won't really be able to see the frontend unless you set up all the module instances in Beez3. To do that, type example.com/?tp=1 to find all the module positions and assign your modules to them. This is only so that you can test functionality. Styling won't matter until you get the template you want to keep installed in Joomla 4.

Test the backend thoroughly. Make sure you can add/edit articles, modules, menu items, etc. Do this when you get to 3.5.1, 3.6.5, 3.10.x, and 4.x.

Run the DB Fix in Extensions -> Manage. Clear Joomla Cache (System -> Clear Cache) between updates. Do backups between each step!!

Check all extensions at the beginning. You might be better off uninstalling whatever you can and reinstalling in 4.x if they're easy plugins/extensions. Alternatively you could use an extension like SPTransfer or J2XML. Create a Joomla 4 site and bring over your content.

Once you get to 3.10.x, follow the instruction in the Step by Step 3.10.x to 4.x document including the pre-update check. make sure you remove leftover 2.5 files that might be lingering.

How to Modify Casiopeia Template Joomla 4

 Cassiopeia template is built using a mix of PHP, XML, Javascript and CSS files (occupying, in total 1½MB). The main template file used by Cassiopeia (..//media/templates/site/cassiopeia/css/template.css)—which you should never edit—is over 300KB containing 1,600 rules. So, if you want a "comprehensive list" of all the rules, you can find them in that file.

The problem with producing a single document that lists all of the CSS descriptors and what they do is that it would be document several hundred pages long, that would be subject to change with new releases of J!, that would be out-of-date in a very short time and something that no-one would read. For people who understand CSS, the language is self-documenting.

As @Per mentions, the method used by people who want to customise the styling of HTML elements (e.g. "button" colours) is to use the inspector (or developer) tools built into the web browser. That's how we do things. We don't refer "documentation".

There is, however, a useful guide that was published in the Joomla Community Magazine in February last year: Joomla 4 – Cassiopeia Template – a bunch of Tips & Tricks. It's a matter of opinion whether that article could be characterised as being adequate for most purposes.

Sometimes people do have difficulties with CSS. I consider myself fairly fluent with CSS but we all learn something every day. :laugh: While it's not our job to provide a free, surrogate website development service—this forum is a self-help resource where we point people in the right direction (we hope) where they can find the answers to their questions—if you're stuck and have a specific question then please start a discussion topic about that matter and we'll do what we can. I hope this general answer to your general question helps.

change container color Cassiopeia Template Joomla 4

If you are using the the Cassiopeia template for Joomla 4 and you want to change the container color ...

How to change container color Cassiopeia Template Joomla 4

You could try the following css entry. This entry sets the background color of the module position bottom-a.

.container-bottom-a {
  background-color: palegreen; /* the color chosen is for example only. it could be changed to suit the need */
}

Make sure to have the css entry in a file named user.css. This file must be located in the directory \media\templates\site\template-name\css.

 You could change the color of the module header with css entry such as the following:

Code:

.container-bottom-a h3 {
  color: white;
}
Note:
The header tag used in the example is h3 - change the css to suit your header tag.

You could change the color of the module's body text with css entry such as the following:

Code: Select all

.container-bottom-a .card-body {
  color: yellow;
}

In these circumstances it is better to provide your site's url so that others can see what is happening and offer suggestions.
